Alarming Pollution Levels

Several parts of Delhi showed an AQI over 500, which translates to 10x the healthy limit recommended by the global health authority.

In some locations, levels of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times above healthy levels.

Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the hazardous haze that covers the capital as the cold season begins.

Nevertheless earlier this year, the newly elected regional leadership approached the judicial authority to request a modification of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Ruling and Reality

Much to the frustration of environmental and health advocates, judges approved the request, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during limited periods throughout the celebrations.

During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the time restrictions across the city, with little monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi showed contamination peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least three years.

Cross-Border Effects

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the festivities.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

Extremely elevated levels of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a major problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been observed to shoot up to significantly exceeding the peak levels ever recorded in Beijing, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest urban center.

Diverse Pollution Factors

The situation in Delhi is caused by a convergence of different contributors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in adjacent states of Punjab and Haryana.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the city as colder air descends.

Public Health and Financial Toll

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous studies.

The contaminated air leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing conditions, and can result in oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be responsible for 10,000 premature fatalities annually in Delhi.
