European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
