Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the top division and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay in 14th position and are half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender fulfils role at each end of the field

After a drab weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to Newcastle's ground on late October for their next round League Cup tie against Newcastle.
