Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to contest certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
